Marine Spatial Planning (MSP)? Different Definitions of MSP?

In 2006 1st workshop on Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) was organize by Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) and become one of the pioneer institution in respect of promoting of science based, integrated, strategic and participatory concepts internationally.

Marine Spatial Planning is a Step-by-Step Approach toward Ecosystem-based Management” (2009) became an internationally recognized standard that contributed to formulating the conceptual approach behind Marine Spatial Planning.

According to IOC, “MSP is a public process of analyzing and allocating the spatial and temporal distribution of human activities in marine areas to achieve ecological, economic and social objectives that have been specified through a political process.

According to Blue Economy Cooperative Research Centre, “Marine Spatial Planning is a multi-objective, multi-use, integrated planning process that represents an agreed set of principles and processes to manage interactions between all uses of ocean space and their impact on the environment (Flannery and Cinneide 2012; Ehler 2021).

According to Meer Wissen African-German Partners for Ocean Knowledge, “MSP is a comprehensive ocean governance process that coordinates human activities in marine and coastal areas through a participatory and transparent approach that makes use of the best available knowledge and data. It integrates interests of multiple maritime sectors, such as fishing, shipping, conservation, renewable energy, and tourism”.

According to Catarina Frazão Santos “Marine spatial planning (MSP) is a process that aims to organize the use of the ocean space, as well as the interactions among human uses (e.g., fisheries, aquaculture, shipping, tourism, renewable energy production) and between users and the marine environment. Over the past 30 years, significant progress has been made by governments in their thinking about MSP. The MSP is currently under development in over 66 countries (44% of the nations with marine waters), encompassing six continents and four ocean basins, and the interest in MSP continues to grow.”
