What is global warming, and what are its causes?

Global warming is an increase in average global temperatures as a result of what is known as the greenhouse effect.  Certain gases in the atmosphere act like glass in a greenhouse, allowing sunlight through to heat the earth’s surface but trapping the heat as it radiates back into the atmosphere. As the greenhouse gases build up in the atmosphere, the earth gets hotter. This process is leading to rapid change in the climate, also known as climate change (Climate Change: What Is It and Why Does It Happen?).

Greenhouse Effect:

The greenhouse effect is a natural process that warms the earth’s surface. When the sun’s energy reaches the earth’s atmosphere, some of it is reflected to space and some is absorbed and re-radiated by greenhouse gases. The absorbed energy warms the atmosphere and the surface of the earth.

Causes of Global Warming:

There are two main causes of global warming
  • Man-Made Causes of Global Warming
  • Natural causes of Global warming

Man-Made Causes of Global Warming

The largest portion of recent global warming, which has led to climate change, has been driven by human emissions and activities. Increased temperatures, changes in humidity, and rising sea levels are all obvious signs of global warming, which indicates that the land is warming quickly as a result of fossil fuel emissions and altering the environment.

These are a few reasons that I compiled below:

1. Deforestation
2. Use of Vehicles
3. Chlorofluorocarbon
4. Industrial development
5. Agriculture
6. Overpopulation

1. Deforestation

Plants are the main source of oxygen. They take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen thereby maintaining environmental balance. Forests are being depleted for many domestic and commercial purposes. This has led to an environmental imbalance, thereby giving rise of global warming. Trees also help in regulating regional rainfall which prevents floods and drought in the area, cutting down trees influences the rainfall patterns globally. Deforestation also leads to changes in the landscape and the earth's surface's reflectivity, which leads to increased absorption of energy from the sun that results in global warming leading to changes in climate patterns.

2. Use of Vehicles

The use of vehicles, even for a very short distance results in various gaseous emissions. Vehicles burn fossil fuels which emit a large amount of carbon dioxide and other toxins into the atmosphere resulting in a temperature increase.

3. Chlorofluorocarbon

With the excessive use of air conditioners and refrigerators, humans have been adding Center for Cybersikkerhed (CFCs) into the environment which affects the atmospheric ozone layer. The Ozone layer protects the earth surface from the harmful ultraviolet rays emitted by the sun. The CFCs has led to ozone layer depletion making way for the ultraviolet rays, thereby increasing the temperature of the earth.

4. Industrial development

Although industrialization has improved living circumstances in many ways, it has also had negative environmental consequences that have changed the climate. With recent advances, human effort has been replaced with technology that uses new sources of energy in the industries. Manufacturing uses a lot of energy and changes natural processes, which contributes to both direct emissions in buildings and indirect emissions from the use of fuel and electricity. Manufacturing processes that utilize a lot of energy, including making chemicals, iron, or steel, are associated with direct greenhouse gas emissions.

5. Agriculture

Food is a basic human necessity, but it must first be produced, stored, processed, packaged, transported, and prepared before it can be served to you. Every stage of food production generates significant volumes of greenhouse gas. Agriculture is one of the most prevalent human sources of climate change, including emissions of gasses and forest conversion to agricultural land. Modern agriculture techniques and food production methods that employ synthetic fertilizers significantly contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, global warming, and climate change. The advent of large-scale agricultural has resulted in deforestation and machine-intensive farming, which contributes to carbon emissions.

6. Overpopulation

Increase in population means more people breathing. This leads to an increase in the level of carbon dioxide, the primary gas causing global warming, in the atmosphere.

Natural causes of Global warming

Natural causes are causes that are created by nature, and numerous natural causes, including variations in the sun's orbit, emissions from volcanoes, changes in the Earth's orbit, and variations in carbon dioxide (CO2) levels, have contributed to these. Over decades or millions of years, global climate change has usually happened very slowly.

These are a few causes that I compiled below:

1. Volcanoes
2. Water vapors
3. Melting permafrost
4. Forest blazes

Natural causes of Global warming

1. Volcanoes

Volcanoes are one of the largest natural contributors to global warming. The ash and smokes emitted during volcanic eruptions goes out into the atmosphere and affects the climate.

Volcanoes Global warming

2. Water Vapour

Water Vapour is a kind of greenhouse gas. Due to the increase in the earth’s temperature more water gets evaporated from the water bodies and stays in the atmosphere adding to global warming.

3. Melting permafrost

Permafrost is there where glaciers are present. It is a frozen soil that has environmental gases trapped in it for several years. As the permafrost melts, it releases the gases back into the atmosphere increasing the earth’s temperature.

4. Forest Blazes

Forest Blazes or forest fires emit a large amount of carbon-containing smoke. These gases are released into the atmosphere and increase the earth’s temperature resulting in global warming.

Therefore, both factors are liable for global warming. I hope this post is enjoyable.
